German Sport Horse - Cross-National Horse Breeding

Stallion Quaterback
Stallion Quaterback

The name "German Sport Horse" ("Deutsches Sportpferd") does not seem to be anything new at first sight. But, appearances are deceptive. In the year 2003 the new German state associations Berlin-Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia decided to make one big population out of four small warmblood populations and effected a collective breeding program for riding horses under the new breed name “German Sport Horse” ("Deutsches Sportpferd").

A basis of 6,500 mares form thereby the fundament for the modern breeding program which sets priorities. Beside the production of top-class sport horses for all disciplines and categories also horse aficionados without any ambitions to compete are especially appealed because of the excellent character traits fixed in the breed. Particularly here, the quality in terms of character, soundness and vitality is a guarantor of fun and joy when handling a horse as partner.

A real advertisement for the German Sport Horse are horses like the Federal Champion Quaterback by Quaterman, the mare Poetin by Sandro Hit - Brentano II, and her full-brother Samba Hit. Breeder and owner is the foundation Brandenburgian main and state stud (Brandenburgisches Haupt- und Landgestuet) at Neustadt (Dosse). After the successes at the federal championships and federal mare shows in the past years, in the year 2003 Poetin could crown her career with a predominant win at the world championship of the six-year-old dressage horses in Verden, and three weeks later she capped it all with another success and won the federal championships at Warendorf. At the same place her brother Samba Hit was awarded with the bronze medal.
